One of France's top ranked male tennis players is Arnaud Clement. His game is a entertaining mix of serious ambition and playful boyish charm. 24-year-old Arnaud reached the finals of the 2001 Australian Open, but sadly lost to his opponent, Andre Agassi in straight sets. Nonetheless, this Frenchman has won respect and the hearts of many around the world.

This summer of 2002 sees Arnaud competing in the Hopman Cup in Perth for his home country of France. Sporting a babelicious new 'do of long spikes and blonde highlights, the tennis star is rocking his way through the championship. Although he lost to the States' Jan-Michael Gambill and Belgium's Xavier Malisse in the singles, he fought back today (Thursday 3rd January 2002) in the mixed doubles against Belgium. Arnaud again faced Mallisse, as well as Lleyton Hewitt's flame and number 5 women's player Kim Clijsters. The first round didn't look too good for Arnaud and his partner - up and coming 18-year-old Virginie Razzano, but in the second round, the French duo smashed Belgium and took out the tiebreak (10-6) as well!!

Thursday 24th January 2002 - 1.55pm - MEN'S DOUBLE SEMI-FINAL
Boutter/Clement lost to Santoro/Llodwen: 6-3, 3-6, 10-12.

Less than a half hour ago, the men's double was wrapped up with the final set scoring 12-10. A close match indeed. The all-French affair consisted of two pairs of good buddies, Fabrice Santoro and Llodwen and the willowy Julien Boutter and superstar Arnaud Clement.
The almost 3-hour gruelling match was taken out by Santoro and Llodwen, with Clement and Boutter narrowly missing out on the honours of reaching the 2002 Australian Open men's double final. It was a very close match with all men playing superbly. There were some great shots and a magnificent comeback by Boutter and Clement during the second set, after their opponents sealed the first set 6-3. Clement and Boutter led 2-0 in the third and deciding set, but was unable to keep their head or overcome 4 match points. Since this was a doubles match, there was no tiebreaker set, so at 6-6, it was up to the team who could achieve 2 up who would steal the match. The restless crowd (waiting for the women's semi of Hingis and Seles) waited 106 minutes in the third set to see Santoro and Llodwen advance to the finals with the result of 6-3, 3-6, 12-10.
This match sustained many fall overs, trips and a nasty meet with the net for Clement, but no serious damage, apart from the bird who met an unlucky end with a fast ball and found his grave only centimetres from Clement's position on the court. Boutter, proving to be as much of an entertainer as his doubles partner, fell to his knees and paid his respect to the little black bird, who was later removed from the court with a towel.

WRITER'S COMMENTARY

Arnaud is a superb player that screams out the "French fighting spirit". France and the world should be proud. I've been a Clement supporter since he blew the country away in the 2001 Australian Open in Melbourne, Victoria and went all the way to the finals! He also proves that tennis is the fashionable sport. And that just because you're hot, tired and sweating your guts out, that's no excuse to be a fashion dag. Arnaud has single-handedly brought bandannas back into tennis!!
