Quote: "If I ever became a teen heartthrob, I'd scar my face!"
Joaquin Phoenix is the kind of actor whose brilliant character portrayal actually inspires you to get off the couch and become an actor yourself after watching one of his movies. Really. And there aren't many actors who can motivate you to do that. Take his supporting role in "Return To Paradise" for example. He plays a drug user convicted in Thailand, where the laws are tougher than his US hometown. He is sentenced to death and until then, he had to endure years of imprisonment in a cold cell. When Joaquin was shivering and stuttering in character, it just inspired you to become an actor - not for the cash, celebrity status or any other shallow reason, but simply to create and dabble in an art. Anybody who can do that to you in a film is truly incredible.
WRITER'S COMMENTARY
My first taste of Joaquin Phoenix's acting was in mid-2001 with his brief role as Claire Danes' overprotective and abusive wife in "U-Turn". Although his performance was excellent, that wasn't what caught my eye. I had always had a bit of a soft spot for him since about early 2000 or so (I don't know why though - probably his charismatic looks or his 'rebel to conformity'-ness), but didn't really admire him yet, because I hadn't seen his acting yet. All I basically knew was that he was River Phoenix's brother and that he was dating one of my favourite actresses Liv Tyler. On Sunday 16th January 2002, I settled down in front of the television at 8.30pm, channel surfing to find the best Sunday night flick to indulge myself in for the next 2 hours or so. After a quick scan of the TV Guide, my best bet was probably "Return To Paradise" on Channel 7. As the opening credits unfolded, I realised that Joaquin Phoenix was in it and I was pretty excited. Anyway, I watched the whole movie and was totally inspired by Joaquin. He now stands as one of my favourite actors of all time.
